The Shackleton was operated by No. 8 Squadron, based at RAF Lossiemouth. The 12 AEWs were given names from the Magic Roundabout and The Herbs TV series. The Nimrod AEW3 was to replace the Shackleton in 1991, but when the project was cancelled the Boeing E-3D Sentry was ordered.
