The Gulf War Air Campaign started in mid-January 1991 with airbases being the initial targets followed by strategic targets such as oil refineries, communications and road systems. Thousands of aircraft were to be involved in the invasion so the distinctive stripes reduced the risk of being attacked by friendly forces. The stripes were painted only on fighters, PR aircraft, troop carriers and light bombers. As Operation Overlord progressed the stripes appeared only on the undersurfaces to avoid air attack whilst on the ground. Stripes were used again in later conflicts such as Korea and the operation in the Suez. This design features a weather worn insignia and Overlord stencil.
