Panavia Tornado GR4 ZG752 In March 2019 the Tornado retired from service with the Royal Air Force after 40 extraordinary years. A series of flypasts were flown by 31 Squadron from RAF Marham. This design series of three Tornados are featured on the back with the front design showing ZG752 crewed by Sqn. Ldr. I. Dornan and Sqn. Ldr. S. Beardmore. V Force V-Force is made up of the Vickers Valiant, Handley Page Victor and Avro Vulcan. These aircraft were chosen for the role of the UK's nuclear deterrent for their quick reaction capability and maneuverability. The Vulcan was best known for its ability to get into the air rapidly and gain altitude at high speed. During the Cold War the RAF worked with NATO as part of a 'one-two' attack strategy. The V Bombers would destroy Warsaw Pact targets such as airbases and command centres ahead of the US SAC nuclear strikes. Most aircrews considered this ultimate sortie as a 'one-way' trip! Avro Vulcan Type-698 B2 Bomber XM607 took part in Operation Black Buck during the Falklands conflict in 1982. As XM598 had technical problems, it was replaced by XM607, which performed the first sortie on Port Stanley Airport, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Martin Withers. RAF Bomber Command insignia RAF Bomber Command was active from 1936 to 1968 with attached squadrons of the RCAF, RAAF and RNZAF. During World War Two aircrews suffered heavy losses with 44% of the force killed in action, 8500 wounded and 840 became POWs. A high price was paid which is now commemorated with a memorial at Lincoln Cathedral and Green Park in London. This design features a battle worn insignia and the motto, 'Strike Hard Strike Sure'.
