Westland Whirlwind
The Whirlwind entered service with the Royal Air Force as a heavy fighter in 1940. It was the most heavily armed and fastest fighters at the time and was used for ground attack missions over France, being particularly good at destroying locomotives. Due to engine and manufacturing problems the aircraft was replaced by the Hawker Typhoon in 1943.

The Saab JA37 Viggen first entered service in c1979 and was solely operated by the Swedish Air Force, retiring in 2005. This type was the first canard design produced in quantity and the most advanced fighter in Europe until the introduction of the Panavia Tornado. V Force
V-Force is made up of the Vickers Valiant, Handley Page Victor and Avro Vulcan. These aircraft were chosen for the role of the UK's nuclear deterrent for their quick reaction capability and manouverability. The Vulcan was best known for its ability to get into the air rapidly and gain altitude at high speed. During the Cold War the RAF worked with NATO as part of a 'one-two' attack strategy. The V Bombers would destroy Warsaw Pact targets such as airbases and command centres ahead of the US SAC nuclear strikes. Most aircrews considered this ultimate sortie as a 'one-way' trip!

North American XB-70 Valkyrie
The Valkyrie was the prototype for the B-70 nuclear bomber capable of long-range sorties travelling at Mach 3 at 70,000ft. The programme for the B-70 was cancelled so the aircraft was given to research into high-speed long-duration flight with the programme finally ending in 1969. The last remaining Valkyrie is on display in the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, Ohio.

Vickers Valiant XD875
The Valiant started service in 1955 at RAF Gaydon. It was the first RAF aircraft to drop a nuclear bomb during a test at Maralinga, Australia. It became one of the the UK's ultimate deterrent - VForce. XD875 was the last airframe to come off the production line.

Lockheed U-2 'Dragon Lady'
World War II taught the US military the value of strategic aerial reconnaissance. The Air Force commissioned the Beacon Hill Report that suggested an aircraft was needed that would carry advanced optics and operate at an altitude of over 70,000ft. Clarence Kelly Johnson from Lockheed designed a jet powered glider, the CL282. At this time the design was recommended to the CIA, so in 1955 the aircraft was re-designated the U-2 and was flown during the Cuban crisis, Vietnam and throughout the Cold War. The U-2 remains in service with NASA and the USAF.

The ill-fated TSR2 was planned as a strike and reconnaissance aircraft for the Royal Air Force. Designed to attack at very low altitude and high speeds to deliver conventional and nuclear weapons. Controversially the programme was scrapped by the British Government in 1965.

The Gnat first flew on 18th July 1955, developed by Folland Aircraft as a light fighter. It entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1959 as a trainer but the type was exported to other countries as a fighter aircraft. The Gnat was used by the RAF Aerobatic Team, finally retiring in 1979.

Curtiss Aeroplane Company
In 1907 Glenn Curtiss became a member of the Aerial Experiment Association founded by Dr Alexander Graham Bell. The purpose of the association was to establish aeronautical research and development. Glenn Curtis then formed the Herring-Curtiss Company with Augustus Herring which was then renamed the Curtiss Aeroplane Company in 1910 based in Hammondsport, New York. Curtiss merged with the Curtiss Motor Company in 1916 and established itself in Buffalo, New York. The Curtiss Aeroplane Company ended in 1929 with the merger of the Wright Corporation.

Convair F-106 Delta Dart
The Delta Dart is part of the Century Series of jets designated the F-106. It was introduced to the USAF in June 1959 as the ultimate interceptor. Early in its service the aircraft broke a world speed record of 1525 mph, piloted by Major Joseph W. Rogers. Its main role was as an air superiority fighter, seeing service in Alaska, Iceland, Germany and South Korea. The Delta Dart was more commonly known as the 'Six'.

Republic F-105 Thunderchief
The Thunderchief is part of the Century Series of jets designated the F-105. It was introduced to the USAF in May 1958 as a fighter-bomber with a massive payload so Thunderchief was tasked with most of the strike missions during the Vietnam War, but suffered considerable losses. It was capable of Mach 2 at high altitude despite being the largest single seat aircraft produced in the U.S. The Thunderchief was eventually replaced by the F-4 Phantom and F-111 Aardvark.
