Westland Whirlwind
The Westland Whirlwind is the British built version of the Sikorsky S-55/H-19 Chickasaw. This type first flew in 1953 and entered service with the Royal Navy in 1954. 848 Naval Air Squadron was the first to operate the Whirlwind in the utility and search and rescue roles. The Royal Air Force and French Navy took on the type in the late 1950s. The RAF search and rescue operated the Whirlwind in a distinctive yellow livery. The Wessex and Sea King eventually replaced the Whirlwind.

Westland Wessex
The Westland Wessex was a British development of the Sikorsky H-34 and first entered service with the Royal Navy in 1961. The type was later used by the Royal Air Force and a number of civilian versions were built. The Wessex was used for anti-submarine warfare, but was better known for its role as a search and rescue helicopter. The HCC4 version was used on the Queen's Flight of the RAF to transport VIPs and members of the Royal Family.

The Wellington first flew in 1936 and entered service with the RAF in 1938 as a medium bomber and anti-submarine aircraft. Its distinctive geodetic construction, designed by Barnes Wallis, gave the bomber a greater chance of surviving anti-aircraft flak. Early in the war, Bomber Command used the Wellington for night raids before the Lancaster and Stirlings took on the role and the Wellington went on to anti-submarine duties. Just over 11,000 of these aircraft were built.

The Vulcan B1 was first delivered to the RAF in 1956 and the B2 in 1960. The Vulcan played an important role in the Cold War as the part of the 'V-Force' alongside the Valiant and Victor. It was armed with nuclear weapons, the Blue Steel missile and conventional bombs. The Vulcan was also used for maritime reconnaissance tasks and as a air-refuelling tanker. The Americans affectionately referred to the Vulcan as the 'Aluminium Cloud' owing to its enormous delta wing profile. The Vulcan was used in anger during the Falklands War in 1982 where it delivered conventional bombs onto the airfield at Port Stanley.
