Tornado 617SQN - Hoodie

We celebrate this famous squadron with a Tornado GR4, squadron badge and motto. The badge appears on a roundel, a wall in fesse, fractured by three flashes of lightning in pile and issuant from the breach water proper. This was approved by King George VI in March 1944 after the successful attack on the dams in May 1943, known as operation 'Chastise'. After the Second World War the Squadron received Lincolns followed by Canberra's in 1952. In 1982 the Tornado GR1 entered service with 617, in a maritime role at Lossiemouth. The GR4 took over and saw active service in the first Gulf War during operation 'Telic.'

Using GCI (Ground Controlled Interception) Phantoms and Lightnings were scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft 'wandering' into UK airspace. The Tupolev Tu-95's or Bear's were often confronted by armed RAF fighters firing passive homing missiles. GCI has since been replaced with Airborne Early Warning and Control systems. These AEW aircraft patrol our UK skies as well as in overseas conflicts. The RAF Typhoon F2 now operates out of Lossiemouth and Coningsby still in the QRA - 'Bear Hunting' role.

The first squadron to operate the Sea Harrier was 800 NAS introduced on HMS Invincible, but was moved to HMS Hermes. The Sea Harrier played a distinctive role in the Falklands War of early 1982. Successes were 20 Argentine aircraft shot down with two losses from ground fire and four to accidents. Success can be attributed to the Sea Harrier using the latest AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and the Blue Fox radar. The Sea Harrier was withdrawn from service in 2006 with the planned replacement being the F35 Lightning II some years later.
