The Westland Whirlwind is the British built version of the Sikorsky S-55/H-19 Chickasaw. This type first flew in 1953 and entered service with the Royal Navy in 1954. 848 Naval Air Squadron was the first to operate the Whirlwind in the utility and search and rescue roles. The Royal Air Force and French Navy took on the type in the late 1950s. The RAF search and rescue operated the Whirlwind in a distinctive yellow livery. The Wessex and Sea King eventually replaced the Whirlwind.
