617 Squadron We celebrate this famous squadron with a Tornado GR4, squadron badge and motto. The badge appears on a roundel, a wall in fesse, fractured by three flashes of lightning in pile and issuant from the breach water proper. This was approved by King George VI in March 1944 after the successful attack on the dams in May 1943, known as operation 'Chastise'. After the Second World War the Squadron received Lincolns followed by Canberra's in 1952. In 1982 the Tornado GR1 entered service with 617, in a maritime role at Lossiemouth. La Fayette Escadrille The La Fayette Escadrille N124 was formed in 1916 during the First World War. Part of the Aéronautique Militaire, the Squadron was made up mostly of American volunteer pilots, the name coming from the Marquis de Lafayette. The Escadrille adopted the bust of Chief Sitting Bull as its emblem. Famous pilots from the First War include Kiffin Rockwell, Victor Chapman and Norman Prince. Success can be attributed to the Sea Harrier using the latest AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and the Blue Fox radar. V Force V-Force is made up of the Vickers Valiant, Handley Page Victor and Avro Vulcan. These aircraft were chosen for the role of the UK's nuclear deterrent for their quick reaction capability and manouverability. The Vulcan was best known for its ability to get into the air rapidly and gain altitude at high speed. During the Cold War the RAF worked with NATO as part of a 'one-two' attack strategy. The V Bombers would destroy Warsaw Pact targets such as airbases and command centres ahead of the US SAC nuclear strikes. Most aircrews considered this ultimate sortie as a 'one-way' trip!
